The agitation over high toll charges at the Epe/Ijebu-Ode Toll Gate continues to grow, as residents of Epe Division gear up for another peaceful protest slated for Saturday, April 26, 2025.

EpeInsights reports that the protest which is set to begin at 6:00 AM from Mojoda Garage, Epe, is a continuation of the people’s resistance against what they describe as “exorbitant” and “unjustifiable” toll fees introduced at the Epe/Ijebu-Ode Expressway by the Ogun State Government.

The current toll structure charges ₦500 for cars, ₦1,000 for SUVs, and up to ₦2,500 for trucks and trailers, a development that has sparked outrage among daily commuters and transport workers.

Residents say the charges are not only excessive but also unfairly imposed on people already grappling with economic hardship.

Adding to public frustration is the presence of two separate toll gates along the expressway, which many argue amounts to double taxation.

Calls have intensified for a review of the fee structure, with community leaders and unions recommending a reduction to ₦200 for cars, ₦300 for SUVs, and ₦500 for trucks.

This upcoming demonstration follows closely on the heels of a similar protest held just days ago, where residents and youth groups voiced their opposition to the same toll fees.

Despite that earlier protest, no relief or policy review has been announced, prompting this renewed action.

Saturday’s protest is endorsed by key community groups and unions including:

  • Council of Nigerian Indigenes (CNI)
  • National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN)
  • Lagos East Youth and Students Association (LEYOSA)
  • Association of Friends and Families (AFF)
  • National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS)
  • Federation of Epe Division Students’ Association (FEDSA)
  • NURTW and RTEAN branches in Epe and Ijebu-Ode

Organizers have emphasized that the demonstration will be peaceful, with maximum security guaranteed for participants.

They are also calling on the Lagos and Ogun State Governments to resolve payment disputes with toll contractors, proposing the use of federal allocation relief funds to ease the burden on road users.

“This is not just about toll fees, it’s about fairness, and ensuring that the people are not further impoverished by policies that do not reflect their realities,” the organizers said.
