The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully seized illicit drugs valued at a staggering N134 billion in Lagos.
EpeInsights gathered that the operation, carried out by the Tin Can Island Port Strategic Command, targeted drug trafficking networks and resulted in the confiscation of over 405 kilograms of drugs, including cannabis, Tramadol, and cocaine, between last year and early this year.
Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju, overseeing operations at the Tin Can Island Port, revealed that the seized drugs included 36.19 kilograms of cannabis indica, 13.75 kilograms of Tramadol, and 57.12 kilograms of cocaine.
The total street value of the drugs is estimated at N134 billion.
Speaking during a visit by maritime journalists, Commander Ofoyeju stressed that drug trafficking and abuse have become a global health issue that demands urgent and continuous intervention.
He commended the leadership of NDLEA Chairman, Buba Marwa, for the agency’s transformation, highlighting improvements in operational tactics such as intelligence-led operations, enhanced funding, and international collaborations.
“The fight against drug trafficking is not just about enforcement but about addressing the broader public health concerns it creates,” Ofoyeju said. “We are using advanced technology, including sniffer dogs, to track and intercept drug shipments more effectively.”
Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA is actively working to reduce drug demand through public education. The agency is conducting awareness campaigns aimed at informing the public about the dangers of drug abuse and its long-term health consequences.
Commander Ofoyeju also emphasized the agency’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with the media to raise awareness and highlight ongoing anti-drug efforts across the country.
The seizure is part of NDLEA’s continued commitment to curbing drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.
The agency’s recent successes in the fight against drugs reflect its enhanced capabilities and determination to keep the streets of Lagos and the entire nation safer from the devastating impacts of narcotics.
