In a bold move to tackle the growing traffic congestion in the city, the Lagos State Government has announced the creation of 3,941 new parking slots across key areas of the state.
EpeInsights reports that the initiative is part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to reduce traffic gridlock and improve vehicular movement throughout Lagos.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing, which marked the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
The new parking facilities aim to reduce the practice of indiscriminate roadside parking, offering residents safer and more organized alternatives.
“Today, we are taking a significant step toward improving traffic flow and reducing the disruptions caused by illegal parking,” said Mr. Osiyemi.
“These new parking slots will serve thousands of vehicles and contribute to a more structured transportation environment in Lagos.”
The new parking spaces have been strategically placed across the city, with a focus on five major areas: Ikeja, Ikoyi, Lekki, Victoria Island, and Surulere.
This zoning strategy is expected to streamline parking operations and help reduce congestion caused by unauthorized parking.
In addition to the new parking spaces, the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has implemented a series of measures to regulate illegal parking.
As part of the initiative, the government has installed 669 parking signages along major roads, designed to guide motorists to the designated parking zones.
These signs will help make the parking system more accessible and user-friendly for residents and visitors alike.
Osiyemi also emphasized the importance of adhering to the new parking rules. “We urge all motorists to make use of the designated parking spaces to avoid penalties,” he said, reinforcing the government’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure and services that improve the quality of life for all Lagosians.
The Lagos State Government continues to prioritize innovative solutions to ease the city’s traffic woes, with this initiative representing just one part of a broader effort to enhance transportation infrastructure.
