The peaceful town of Epe has been thrown into turmoil following the indefinite suspension of the installation of a new monarch, the Olu-Epe, by the Local Government Chairman, Princess Surah Animashaun.
EpeInsights reports that the decision, which comes amid rising tension surrounding the royal succession, was made in response to a growing crisis sparked by the selection of High Chief Adeniyi Kadri Odedeogboro as the Oba-elect.
His emergence on June 2, 2025, reportedly followed Epe’s longstanding tradition where the Balogun ascends the throne upon the passing of a reigning king.

Recall that Oba Sefiu Olatunji Adewale, died on Saturday and was buried same day.

However, the process has not been without dispute. High Chief Iskilu Olajide Ikuforiji is also laying claim to the throne, fueling unrest within the community.
Citing unforeseen circumstances, security concerns and public health issues, Chairman Animashaun issued an official suspension of the installation rites, aimed at de-escalating tensions and restoring order.
In a further move to protect the peace, the Chairman also cancelled the Eid-el-Adha (Ileya) and Jumat services scheduled for this Friday at the 1st Epe Central Mosque and Eid Ground Street, Oke Balogun.
These cancellations, officials say, are part of a broader effort to prevent public gatherings that could exacerbate the conflict.
“This decision was not taken lightly. It is in the best interest of Epe’s safety and unity,” Animashaun said in a statement.
“We urge all stakeholders to remain calm as the appropriate authorities work toward a peaceful resolution.”
The Epe community, historically known for its rich cultural heritage and royal traditions, now awaits further updates from the government and traditional council on the next steps in the selection process.
As tensions simmer, residents are calling for dialogue, fairness, and respect for tradition — hoping that peace and order will soon be restored to the royal town.
