A tragic building collapse in the Mushin area of Lagos has claimed the life of one individual, with three others rescued alive, according to officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Epeinsights learnt that the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, around 3:30 PM, when a one-storey building under construction suddenly collapsed.
The building, located along Ishaga Road, directly opposite the Central Mosque in Idi Araba, Mushin, was still in the construction phase when the disaster struck.
Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, the Coordinator of NEMA’s Lagos Territorial Office, confirmed the death toll on Monday. “So far, one person has been confirmed dead, while three others have been rescued alive. Search and rescue operations are ongoing,” Farinloye stated.
Emergency response teams were quick to arrive on the scene. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, along with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Lagos State Ambulance Service, and the Nigeria Police, responded to the distress call received at approximately 3:30 PM.
According to the spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Shakiru Amodu, the collapsed building trapped several workers. “Unfortunately, one adult male has been recovered dead,” he confirmed.
The rescue operation led to the successful extrication of three male construction workers, all of whom sustained varying degrees of injury.
They were given initial medical attention at the scene and then transferred to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Director, Margaret Adeseye, explained in a statement that the building, which was a one-storey structure under construction, collapsed unexpectedly. The authorities are continuing their search and rescue efforts to ensure no one else is trapped under the rubble.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about building safety and construction site protocols in Lagos, as authorities work to prevent future tragedies.
The identity of the deceased and the rescued individuals has not been disclosed at the time of publication.
