A major milestone in Epe Division’s electricity development has been recorded as Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru facilitated the commissioning of a 505-kilowatt Interconnected Mini-Grid and flagged off its 5-megawatt expansion project.

Epe Insights reports that the project is expected to improve electricity supply, support businesses, create employment opportunities and accelerate economic growth across Epe and neighbouring communities.

The renewable energy project was delivered through a partnership involving the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the European Union, the German Government through GIZ, with Senator Abiru playing a key role in facilitating its implementation.

Representing the senator at the commissioning ceremony, former Chief Whip of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdulateef Rotimi Abiru, described the initiative as the outcome of over four years of sustained advocacy and strategic engagement.

According to him, the intervention was driven by the determination to ensure that Epe Division benefited from the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS), a programme designed to expand access to reliable electricity in underserved communities.

He explained that the newly commissioned 505kW mini-grid represents the first phase of the project, while the groundbreaking for the 5MW expansion marks the beginning of a larger investment to meet the increasing energy demands of the division.

Senator Abiru noted that stable electricity remains critical to unlocking economic opportunities and improving the living standards of residents across Lagos East Senatorial District.

He added that the project will strengthen small and medium-scale enterprises by providing a more reliable power supply, reducing operating costs and encouraging business expansion.

The improved electricity network is also expected to support key sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education and commerce, where access to dependable energy remains essential for growth and productivity.

Beyond improving electricity supply, the project is projected to attract new investments, stimulate entrepreneurship and create more employment opportunities for youths and local entrepreneurs across Epe Division.

The senator attributed the successful delivery of the project to the Federal Government’s ongoing power sector reforms, as well as strong collaboration between development partners and relevant government agencies.

Stakeholders believe the 5MW expansion project will significantly increase electricity generation capacity, providing long-term energy security for homes, businesses and public institutions within the division.

The commissioning further reflects Senator Abiru’s commitment to attracting impactful infrastructure projects that improve the quality of life of residents and support sustainable development across Epe Division.

With the mini-grid now operational and expansion work underway, residents and business owners are optimistic that the project will transform economic activities, improve productivity and position Epe as a stronger destination for investment and industrial growth.
