In the past year, the Special Taskforce on Land Grabbers has made significant strides, processing a total of 4,458 petitions.
EpeInsights gathered that of these, 403 have been concluded, including 139 enforcement approvals and 204 inscription approvals. These efforts reflect the ongoing commitment to addressing land grabbing issues within the state.
Additionally, the Taskforce secured 15 court rulings and 20 judgments in favor of the State Government, further strengthening legal protections around land ownership and disputes.
Speaking at the ongoing Ministerial Press Briefing at Alausa, Ikeja, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, highlighted these achievements and shed light on other key developments within the Ministry.
Pedro revealed that the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency handled 624 cases related to child maintenance issues and resolved 294 cases concerning child custody and access during the year.
The Virtual Response and Referral Service also proved invaluable, assisting with over 80,000 cases.
Meanwhile, the Counselling and Psychotherapy Services department has directly supported over 4,000 survivors of trauma, abuse, and psychological challenges.
These services reached an additional 2 million people directly and over 4 million people indirectly.
Pedro further announced that the State Government has approved two crucial bills that will soon be sent to the State Assembly.
The first aims to establish a Lis Pendens (Pending Litigation) Registry, ensuring that all land-related litigations are officially recorded to protect the public from unknowingly purchasing disputed property.
The second bill seeks to create a Marriage and Dissolution Registry, which will register all forms of marriages and issue official certificates.
In addition to these bills, the Ministry has prepared an amendment to the State Tenancy Law of 2016. This amendment will address pressing concerns such as exploitative rent increases, non-payment of rent arrears, and delays in tenancy-related litigation.
These initiatives are part of the government’s broader effort to safeguard citizens’ rights and improve the quality of life for residents across the state.
