Sanwo-Olu Assesses Traffic Gridlock on Lagos Island Following Independence Bridge Closure

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has conducted an on-the-spot assessment of major traffic-congested areas on Lagos Island following the closure of the Independence Bridge by the Federal Government for repairs.

Epe Insights learnt that the Governor was accompanied by Transportation Commissioner, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Information and Strategy Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso, and he General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki.

Governor Sanwo-Olu attributed the current gridlock to inadequate communication and planning before the bridge closure.

To address the situation, Sanwo-Olu assured Lagosians that all necessary traffic management measures would be deployed to ease movement. He urged residents without urgent business on the Island to stay home and utilize online platforms where possible.

“For those who must commute, alternative routes will be made available, with LASTMA officials managing traffic flow to reduce congestion.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu however urged motorists to plan their journeys and strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations to prevent further delays.e Federal Ministry of Works had earlier announced that the Independence Bridge would remain closed from April 1 to May 31, 2025, for rehabilitation work aimed at improving road infrastructure in the state.

Earlier, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, ordered the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge.
