The Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has commenced the compulsory registration of all commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as Okada operators, across the council area as part of measures to strengthen security, safety, and accountability.
Epe Insights reports that the registration exercise is designed to properly document commercial riders, improve passenger protection, and enhance collaboration between transport operators and security agencies within Ibeju-Lekki.
According to the local government, riders who complete the registration will be issued official identification cards alongside unique motorcycle stickers to enable easy identification and verification on the roads.
Speaking on the initiative, the Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, described the exercise as a proactive approach to safeguarding lives and property in the fast-growing council area.
Hon. Olowa explained that the programme is not intended to penalise genuine operators but to ensure that only identifiable and responsible riders operate within the community, thereby reducing criminal activities linked to unregistered motorcycles.
He urged all Okada riders to comply promptly with the directive, warning that enforcement measures would be introduced against defaulters once the registration window closes.
The council boss also appealed to motorcycle union leaders and community stakeholders to mobilise their members and ensure seamless participation in the exercise for overall public safety.
Residents were assured that the initiative aligns with the local government’s broader commitment to maintaining order, improving transport regulation, and promoting a safer environment for people living and doing business in Ibeju-Lekki.
The local government reaffirmed its resolve to sustain policies that enhance security, accountability, and community well-being across the council area.
