President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the Federal University of Science and Technology in Epe, Lagos State, a decision made before the Federal Government announced a seven-year ban on creating new tertiary institutions.

EpeInsights reports that Senate President Godswill Akpabio disclosed this during Thursday’s plenary, confirming that Tinubu had assented to the university’s establishment bill earlier in the year.

Akpabio commended the President for expanding access to higher education, describing the move as proof of his commitment to advancing science and technology-driven development.

The sponsor of the bill, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, said the new university would focus on key areas such as engineering, artificial intelligence and data science, disciplines critical to Nigeria’s digital economy.

The approval comes despite a moratorium announced by the Federal Executive Council to halt new federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education for seven years.

The move, according to Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, is aimed at improving standards and optimizing the use of existing facilities.
