A commercial bus driver suspected to be under the influence of alcohol crashed into a streetlight pole on Saturday in the Alausa area of Ikeja, Lagos, leaving four passengers seriously injured.

EpeInsights learnt that the accident occurred around 2:15 p.m. near the Lagos State Government Secretariat when the bus, with registration number KTU 69 YJ, veered off the road and collided with the pole.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) at the scene confirmed that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to intoxication. The bus was reportedly fully loaded with passengers at the time of the incident.

Four victims including a couple, a man, and a woman—were rescued by LASTMA officials and given first aid before being handed over to personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

They were later transferred to the Trauma and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate for further medical attention.

Other passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated on-site.

Officials of the Alausa Division of the Nigeria Police Force were also present to secure the area and support the rescue operation.

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the act of drunk driving, warning that the agency will not tolerate such recklessness on Lagos roads.

He reaffirmed LASTMA’s ongoing commitment to educating commercial drivers at motor parks and garages on the dangers of driving under the influence.

“We are intensifying advocacy and monitoring to reduce road accidents caused by intoxicated drivers,” he said, while wishing the injured passengers a speedy recovery.Drunk Driver Crashes Commercial Bus in Alausa, Injures Four Passengers
