Residents of Epe, Lagos State, have renewed calls for urgent repairs on Berger Bridge following a fatal accident that claimed one life early Monday morning.
EpeInsights learnt that the incident occurred near the T-Junction in Epe when an oncoming vehicle reportedly rammed into a stationary truck that had broken down on the bridge overnight without any warning signs.
Eyewitnesses said the impact of the collision was severe, leading to the instant death of one occupant and injuries to others.
“The truck was there since last night without any caution sign. The car was coming at full speed and didn’t see it early enough. The accident was really terrible,” said a resident, Wasiu.
The crash caused heavy traffic congestion along the bridge and adjoining roads as emergency responders and traffic officials arrived to manage the scene and clear the wreckage.
Residents blamed the accident on the poor state of the bridge, describing it as a disaster waiting to happen.
“Some parts of this bridge are already breaking off. The government needs to fix it before we lose more lives,” lamented another resident, Mrs. Sherifat Balogun.
They appealed to the Lagos State Government and relevant agencies to carry out immediate maintenance of the bridge and ensure stricter enforcement of road safety rules to prevent similar tragedies.
Traffic officials also urged motorists to drive cautiously and promptly report any broken-down vehicles to the nearest authority to help maintain safety on the road.
