The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe, has commenced free maternal, neonatal, and preventive healthcare services under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), as part of efforts by the Federal Government to expand access to quality and affordable healthcare.
EpeInsights learnt that the Medical Director of FMC Epe, Dr. Adesola Kaka, disclosed this during activities marking Customer Service Week, stating that the hospital has been approved to provide Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (CEmONC) fully covered by the NHIS.
According to him, the initiative ensures that pregnant women who experience complications will receive emergency treatment at no cost, with expenses covered through the insurance scheme.
“If a pregnant woman has complications, she will be treated free of charge. The cost will be borne by NHIS. With a valid NIN, even those not previously enrolled can be registered to access the services,” Dr. Kaka said.
He added that FMC Epe has also been selected as one of three pilot centres in Lagos State to offer free neonatal intensive care, covering incubator use, laboratory tests, and prolonged ICU treatment for newborns requiring special attention.
“Even if a baby is delivered outside FMC but needs intensive care, all tests and treatment will be free. This is a major relief for mothers who often struggle with hospital bills,” he explained.
Dr. Kaka further announced plans to establish a wellness clinic at the hospital to promote preventive healthcare and encourage routine medical checkups for early detection of health risks.
“People should cultivate the habit of regular checkups instead of waiting until illness becomes severe,” he advised.
The FMC boss noted that the new services form part of the Federal Government’s broader initiative to strengthen healthcare delivery, reduce poverty, and ease the burden of medical costs for families.
He described FMC Epe as a lifeline to communities in Epe, Lekki, Ibeju-Lekki, and Ijebu-Ode, pledging continued commitment to affordable and quality healthcare delivery.
