Independence Day: Sanwo-Olu Calls for Confidence, Unity, Positive Action

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has encouraged Nigerians to remain confident that the challenges confronting the nation will ultimately pave the way for a brighter and more prosperous future.

EpeInsights reports that the Governor gave the charge during the Jumat Service held at the Lagos State Secretariat Community Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja, to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day Anniversary. He was represented at the event by his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that Nigeria is currently grappling with economic pressures, security concerns and the need for inclusive growth difficulties which, he said, test the country’s resilience. He stressed that while reforms may come with pain, they are essential for laying the foundation for long-term benefits.

“With patience, steadfastness, and trust in Allah, we must be confident that the ongoing reforms will usher in a brighter future for our nation,” the Governor said. He added that citizens should tone down negativity about the country, advocating instead for constructive criticism paired with workable solutions.

Sanwo-Olu also emphasised the importance of education and values in nation-building. “The way we teach our children must change. In this era of AI and rapid transformation, we must equip them with relevant knowledge while grounding them in family values and the teachings of Allah,” he noted.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, the Governor said the occasion honours the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers and countless citizens who worked for unity and progress. He urged all Nigerians to emulate their dedication and continue working for a stronger nation.

Delivering the sermon, Imam Shakiru Ayinde Gafar stressed that leaders must remain accountable, fair, and just, drawing inspiration from Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) example of simplicity and universal leadership. He also called on citizens to embrace daily self-reflection, justice, and righteous living as the path to Allah’s mercy.

In a goodwill message, the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro—represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Engr. AbdulHafiz Toriola—urged Nigerians to stay hopeful, prayerful and committed to national progress.
