The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has unveiled a renewed vision for sports development, anchored on reforms that aim to reposition Lagos as the leading centre of sporting excellence in Africa.

EpeInsights reports that the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, the Director-General of LSSC, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, outlined a comprehensive strategy built on three key pillars: Sports Development Reforms, a Renewed Grassroots Framework and a Roadmap to Athletes’ Revitalisation.

According to Fatodu, the reforms are not short-term measures but carefully structured to ensure inclusivity, measurable impact, and sustainability.

“We are not just planning for today but for the future. Our reforms will guarantee enduring, all-around sports development that will stand the test of time while setting the pace for sports administration in Africa,” he said.

Under the Renewed Grassroots Framework, Fatodu explained that the Commission is working closely with stakeholders, teachers, parents, and community clubs to expand access to sports facilities and strengthen participation across all divisions of the state. The LSSC also announced measures to secure athletes’ careers beyond active competition. Fatodu disclosed that biometric data capture will be introduced for proper profiling, facility access, and performance monitoring. In addition, career sustainability programmes will be launched to prepare athletes for life after sports.

To further strengthen communication, an Athletes’ Liaison Officer—preferably a former athlete—will be appointed to serve as a direct bridge between athletes and the Commission. While reaffirming the dissolution of the senior Team Lagos, Fatodu said a new team would soon be reconstituted with renewed discipline, energy and a stronger competitive spirit.

He called on aspiring athletes to take advantage of the ongoing registration process via https://lssc.lg.gov.ng/athlete-registration/.

With Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s support and collaboration with sports stakeholders, Fatodu expressed optimism that Lagos will inspire a new generation of champions, empower communities, and restore pride to the state.

“Beyond producing champions, we are building careers and transforming lives through sports,” he concluded. The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has unveiled a renewed vision for sports development, anchored on reforms that aim to reposition Lagos as the leading centre of sporting excellence in Africa.
