The historic town of Ilara, in Eredo-Epe, came alive over the weekend as the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo (Telade IV), conferred chieftaincy titles on six distinguished Nigerians in recognition of their service to society and commitment to community development.

EpeInsights reports that the colourful ceremony, held at the palace grounds, drew dignitaries from across politics, business, academia and traditional institutions.

Among the newly installed chiefs is Prof. John Obafunwa, Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), who was decorated as the Balogun of Ilara.

Others honoured include Mr. Jelili Olayemi, Prof. Kemi Pinheiro, Dr. Olanrewaju Obasa, and Ambassador Oluwatoyin Lawal, who became the Bobaguwa of Ilara, alongside his wife, Mrs. Abiodun Lawal, conferred as the Yeye Bobaguwa of Ilara.

In his remarks, Oba Ogunsanwo explained that the conferment was part of a deliberate effort to strengthen ties between the traditional institution and reputable Nigerians who can contribute meaningfully to the growth of Ilara Kingdom.

“This initiative is aimed at bringing respected individuals closer to the throne so they can support the development of our community, especially in education, healthcare and youth empowerment,” the monarch said.

The new chiefs pledged their commitment to the palace’s vision of progress. Ambassador Lawal and his wife, while expressing gratitude for the honour, promised to work hand-in-hand with the monarch and the people of Ilara to advance community development.

“We are committed to playing our part in uplifting this kingdom through initiatives that will impact lives positively,” they noted.

The Alara congratulated the honourees and urged them to uphold the values of service, unity, and integrity, which the titles represent.

The event was not just a celebration of culture and tradition but also a renewed call for collaboration between traditional leadership and accomplished Nigerians in driving grassroots development.
