Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their remarkable triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship, hailing the team as a powerful symbol of Nigerian excellence and determination.

EpeInsights reports that D’Tigress, led by Coach Rena Wakama, secured a resounding 78–64 victory over Mali in the finals on Sunday night at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The win marks Nigeria’s seventh AfroBasket title overall and a fifth consecutive championship, cementing the team’s dominance in African women’s basketball.

In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the team’s unwavering spirit, tactical discipline, and leadership on the court.

“Congratulations to D’Tigress for making the nation proud again,” the Governor said. “Winning it seven times in total and five times consecutively is no small feat. It takes heart, discipline, and grit.”

Sanwo-Olu commended the leadership of Coach Rena Wakama, describing her impact on the team as “remarkable,” and a testament to what can be achieved with passion, strategy, and commitment.

“These women continue to show the world what Nigerian excellence looks like. It looks great and shines through,” he added.
