The Ibeju-Lekki Local Government on Saturday welcomed a new cohort of students into its ongoing weekend tutorial program, aimed at boosting academic performance among secondary school students in the region.

EpeInsights learnt that the program, hosted at Pan-Atlantic University, has become a cornerstone of the local government’s educational interventions since its launch in 2021.

The tutorials provide extra academic support to students in public schools, particularly those preparing for national examinations such as WAEC and NECO.

During the orientation for newly admitted students, Executive Chairman of the local government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, addressed the students and urged them to remain focused on their academic goals. He also warned against social vices such as drug abuse, cultism, and other behaviors that could derail their future.

“Whatever you hope to become tomorrow starts with the choices you make today, stay focused, be curious and keep learning.” Olowa said.

Now in his second term, Olowa said the tutorial program is part of a broader education-focused agenda by his administration.

He noted that since its inception, students participating in the weekend classes have demonstrated noticeable improvement in academic outcomes.

The Chairman also acknowledged Pan-Atlantic University for hosting the program, thanking Vice Chancellor Professor Enase Okonedo and the university’s leadership for their continued collaboration.

According to Olowa, the institution has provided a stable and resource-rich environment that has been critical to the success of the initiative.

Saturday’s event was attended by local government officials, education stakeholders and community leaders.

Among those present were Hon. Sebiu Lawal, Chief Whip of the Legislative Council and Councillor for Ward C2; Mr. Bidemi, Managing Director and CEO of Core Bank; and other dignitaries.

Looking ahead, Olowa said the council is considering additional educational support measures, including digital learning platforms and merit-based scholarships, to further support students in Ibeju-Lekki.

The weekend tutorial initiative is one of several youth-oriented programs launched under Olowa’s administration, which has prioritized education, vocational training, and infrastructure development in the local government.
