President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the comprehensive rehabilitation of Terminal One at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, in a major move to revamp Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.

EpeInsights reports that the project, which received Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval on Thursday, will cost ₦712.26 billion.

The plan is part of a larger ₦900 billion national aviation upgrade initiative and includes the expansion of Terminal Two in Lagos.

According to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the contract has been awarded to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

Keyamo explained that the terminal’s current structure will be dismantled down to its bare frame and rebuilt with modern mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems to improve passenger experience and operational efficiency.

As part of the broader modernization, new facilities will be constructed, including an aircraft apron, improved access roads, bridges, and other support infrastructure.

In addition to the terminal upgrade, the FEC also approved a ₦49.9 billion project to install a state-of-the-art perimeter fencing system around the airport.

The 14.6-kilometre steel fence will be outfitted with an intrusion detection system, CCTV cameras, solar-powered floodlights, and a dedicated patrol route.

A central command center will also be established to enable real-time surveillance and rapid response to security breaches. “Any object or person approaching the fence will be instantly detected, and the precise location pinpointed,” Keyamo stated.

The airport rehabilitation and security enhancement projects are expected to significantly elevate safety standards and operational capacity at MMIA—Nigeria’s busiest airport—and position the country as a competitive hub in African aviation.
