The Executive Chairman of Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Engr. Rasaki Bamidele Kasali (MNSE, MNATE), has led the council’s participation in the 2026 Lagos Tree Planting Day, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability and a greener future.
Epe Insights reports that the tree-planting exercise took place at the Lekki LCDA Secretariat as part of the Lagos State Government’s annual environmental campaign aimed at promoting climate action and increasing green spaces across the state.
The event was organised through the Department of Environment and attracted council executives, heads of departments, staff members and pupils from selected primary and secondary schools within the council area.
Participating schools included St. David Anglican Primary School, Oshoroko, Roman Catholic Mission Central Primary School, Lekki, and Mugraf Group of Schools, which was represented by pupils from both its primary and secondary sections.
The participation of schoolchildren highlighted the importance of involving the younger generation in environmental conservation and encouraging them to become responsible stewards of nature.
Addressing participants during the exercise, Engr. Kasali described tree planting as one of the most effective ways of protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development.
He noted that trees contribute significantly to cleaner air, improved environmental quality and healthier communities, making them essential to the well-being of present and future generations.
According to the Chairman, environmental sustainability requires collective action from government, institutions, schools and residents working together to preserve natural resources.
He encouraged residents across Lekki LCDA to cultivate the habit of planting and nurturing trees, stressing that every tree planted today contributes to a healthier tomorrow.
Kasali explained that tree planting also plays an important role in combating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, improving biodiversity and reducing environmental degradation.

He added that expanding green spaces helps improve urban landscapes while creating more pleasant and healthier environments for families and communities.
The Chairman commended the Lagos State Government for sustaining the annual Tree Planting Day initiative, describing it as a forward-looking programme that continues to inspire environmental responsibility across the state.
He praised the commitment of the Ministry of the Environment and other stakeholders for promoting awareness about environmental protection through practical community-based initiatives.
The participation of pupils in the exercise also served as an educational experience, teaching children the importance of environmental conservation from an early age.
Teachers and school administrators encouraged the pupils to continue caring for the planted trees and to share the message of environmental responsibility with their families and communities.
Environmental experts have consistently emphasised that tree planting remains one of the most practical and cost-effective measures for improving climate resilience and supporting ecosystem restoration.
Beyond reducing pollution, trees provide shade, improve soil quality, reduce erosion and support wildlife, making them valuable assets to both urban and rural communities.
The Lekki LCDA administration reaffirmed its commitment to supporting programmes that protect the environment while promoting healthier living conditions for residents.

Officials noted that environmental sustainability remains an important pillar of the council’s development agenda, alongside youth empowerment, infrastructure development and community welfare.
Residents who attended the exercise commended the initiative and expressed support for more environmental awareness campaigns across schools and neighbourhoods.
Many participants described the programme as a timely reminder that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility requiring continuous public participation.
As the 2026 Lagos Tree Planting Day concludes, Lekki LCDA says it will continue collaborating with the Lagos State Government and community stakeholders to promote environmental sustainability, encourage climate-conscious practices and build a greener future for generations to come.
