Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reassured residents of flood-affected communities in Ibeju-Lekki that his administration will implement lasting drainage and flood control measures to protect lives, property and critical infrastructure.
Epe Insights reports that Governor Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance during an inspection of flood-affected areas in Gbetu-Iwerekun, where he assessed the impact of recent heavy rainfall and reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to sustainable environmental solutions.
The Governor explained that the reduction in rainfall over the past few days created an opportunity for government officials to carry out physical inspections of affected communities.
According to him, the visit was necessary to identify locations requiring additional drainage improvements, water channel clearance and long-term investments in flood management infrastructure.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said effective planning depends on firsthand assessment, stressing that physical inspections provide a clearer understanding of the environmental realities facing residents.
He noted that the inspection would enable the government to prioritise interventions capable of improving water flow and reducing the impact of flooding in vulnerable communities.
The Governor explained that his decision to visit Gbetu-Iwerekun and other affected communities was deliberate, as the administration remains committed to extending development efforts beyond the metropolitan parts of Lagos.
He said it was important to personally observe how floodwaters naturally flow through communities and evaluate the effectiveness of existing drainage infrastructure.
According to Sanwo-Olu, understanding local environmental conditions is essential to designing practical and sustainable engineering solutions.
The Governor assured residents that the Lagos State Government remains fully aware of their concerns and is committed to addressing the challenges identified during the inspection.
He stated that all necessary corrective measures recommended by technical experts would be implemented to strengthen drainage systems and improve flood resilience.
