Sanwo-Olu Assures Residents of Lasting Flood Solutions in Gbetu-Iwerekun

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reassured residents of flood-affected communities in Ibeju-Lekki that his administration will implement lasting drainage and flood control measures to protect lives, property and critical infrastructure.

Epe Insights reports that Governor Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance during an inspection of flood-affected areas in Gbetu-Iwerekun, where he assessed the impact of recent heavy rainfall and reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to sustainable environmental solutions.

The Governor explained that the reduction in rainfall over the past few days created an opportunity for government officials to carry out physical inspections of affected communities.

According to him, the visit was necessary to identify locations requiring additional drainage improvements, water channel clearance and long-term investments in flood management infrastructure.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said effective planning depends on firsthand assessment, stressing that physical inspections provide a clearer understanding of the environmental realities facing residents.

He noted that the inspection would enable the government to prioritise interventions capable of improving water flow and reducing the impact of flooding in vulnerable communities.

The Governor explained that his decision to visit Gbetu-Iwerekun and other affected communities was deliberate, as the administration remains committed to extending development efforts beyond the metropolitan parts of Lagos.

He said it was important to personally observe how floodwaters naturally flow through communities and evaluate the effectiveness of existing drainage infrastructure.

According to Sanwo-Olu, understanding local environmental conditions is essential to designing practical and sustainable engineering solutions.

The Governor assured residents that the Lagos State Government remains fully aware of their concerns and is committed to addressing the challenges identified during the inspection.

He stated that all necessary corrective measures recommended by technical experts would be implemented to strengthen drainage systems and improve flood resilience.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the government’s objective is to reduce flood risks while protecting homes, businesses, roads and other public infrastructure.

He reiterated that environmental sustainability remains a major priority of his administration as Lagos continues to expand and develop.

The Governor also appealed to residents to support government efforts by protecting drainage channels and avoiding activities that obstruct the free flow of water.

He stressed that indiscriminate waste disposal, blocked drainage systems and illegal structures along waterways contribute significantly to flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

According to him, successful flood management requires shared responsibility between government institutions and members of the public.

Sanwo-Olu encouraged residents to remain environmentally conscious by keeping drainage channels clean and reporting blocked waterways to the appropriate authorities.

Environmental experts accompanying the inspection noted that regular maintenance of drainage infrastructure and improved community participation remain essential to reducing flood-related challenges.

The visit also highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the Lagos State Government and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government in addressing environmental concerns across the area.

Officials reaffirmed their commitment to implementing practical infrastructure projects capable of strengthening drainage systems and improving water management.

Residents welcomed the Governor’s visit, expressing optimism that the inspection would accelerate the execution of long-term flood control projects within the community.

As the assessment continues, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed that his administration will continue investing in resilient infrastructure, environmental protection and sustainable drainage solutions. He urged residents to work closely with government agencies in preserving public infrastructure and building safer, flood-resilient communities across Lagos State.
