As His Royal Majesty, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos, prepares to mark his birthday on October 29, 2025, he has made a heartfelt appeal to Nigerians, urging them to redirect the money they would spend on birthday congratulatory messages in newspapers, television or radio toward charitable causes instead.

EpeInsights reports that in a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy, Oba Akiolu encouraged well-meaning individuals, corporate bodies, and the general public to use such funds to make a tangible difference in their communities.

The monarch suggested that donations be used for the purchase of essential drugs and medical supplies for health facilities, including Zenith Iga Idunganran Health Center, Police Hospital Falomo, Massey Street Children’s Hospital, and other primary health centers across Lagos Island.

He also proposed that contributions go toward the procurement and installation of solar-powered streetlights for mosques and churches within the area — prioritizing the Oba’s Mosque at Okiti Lane and the Methodist Church on Iga Idunganran Street, Isale-Eko.

According to the statement, plans are underway to open a dedicated account for these charitable projects, and details will be announced soon.

Oba Akiolu expressed deep appreciation for the continued love, loyalty and support of Lagosians, extending warm regards to all who have stood by him and the royal institution over the years.Oba Akiolu Urges Nigerians to Support Charity Instead of Birthday TributesOba Akiolu Urges Nigerians to Support Charity Instead of Birthday Tributes
