Workers across Lagos State joined millions around the world to commemorate the 2025 International Workers’ Day with the theme: “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship.”
EpeInsights reports that the celebration, held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, was attended by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who expressed his administration’s unwavering support for workers in the state.
Addressing a crowd of union members and public servants, Sanwo-Olu endorsed all the demands presented by labour unions and pledged continued efforts to strengthen the public service.
He also announced that next year’s May Day celebration would take place at the newly rehabilitated National Stadium in Surulere, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving public infrastructure.
“We are committed to building a more robust and efficient workforce. Your contributions are the backbone of Lagos State, and we will continue to prioritize your welfare.” Sanwo-Olu said.
Also speaking at the event, the State Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, and the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, praised Lagos workers for their dedication.
They highlighted several initiatives under the Sanwo-Olu administration aimed at improving staff welfare and creating a more conducive working environment.
Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos chapter, Comrade Funmilayo Sessi, commended the state government for the timely implementation of the new minimum wage of ₦85,000 and other consequential adjustments.
However, she urged the administration to ensure that workers in all agencies and parastatals also benefit from the new wage structure.
“While we appreciate the steps taken so far, we call for inclusivity in implementing the new wage to cushion the effects of economic hardship on all workers.” Sessi noted.
Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman in Lagos, Gbenga Ekundayo, applauded the resilience of workers and called on the Federal Government to grant Lagos special status and increased funding due to its high population.
He also encouraged residents to fulfill their civic duty by paying taxes to support infrastructure development.
Despite the early morning rain, workers turned out in large numbers for the colourful parade. Dressed in customized T-shirts, caps, and various Ankara fabrics, different labour unions marched proudly, showcasing solidarity and unity.
