As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the Executive Chairman of Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Engr. Rasaki Bamidele Kasali, has urged citizens to stay hopeful and united in the face of ongoing challenges to the nation’s democratic progress.

EpeInsights reports that in a message titled “Happy Democracy Day,” Kasali reflected on the historical significance of June 12, 1993, widely regarded as Nigeria’s fairest election.

He paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, whose presumed victory in the annulled election became a powerful symbol of the country’s democratic struggle.

“On June 12, 1993, Nigerians stood together, voting for Chief MKO Abiola and igniting hope for a new era,” Kasali stated.

“Though that moment was nearly stolen by the annulment, our spirit remained unbroken.”

He acknowledged the rebirth of Nigeria’s democracy with the start of the Fourth Republic in 1999 and highlighted the continued efforts to sustain it 26 years later.

However, he also cautioned that democracy in the country faces real and persistent challenges.

“Despite this, we must hold onto hope,” he emphasized.

“Today, we remember the sacrifices of patriots like MKO Abiola and renew our pledge to protect what they fought for.”Lekki LCDA Chairman Calls for Renewed Commitment to Democratic Ideals

Kasali called on the people of Lekki LCDA to commit themselves to building a more inclusive and accountable local government, one where every voice counts and democratic governance delivers real dividends.

“Let us continue to work together to build a Lekki LCDA where every voice matters, and where democracy delivers on its promises,” he urged.

The Democracy Day message from Chairman Kasali comes as part of nationwide commemorations, echoing the voices of leaders across Nigeria who are calling for unity, resilience and a recommitment to the values that underpin the nation’s democracy.
