In a bid to enhance greener, cleaner and more sustainable public spaces across Lagos State, the General Manager of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), on Wednesday.

Epeinsights learnt that the meeting, held at the Ikeja Secretariat, provided an opportunity for both institutions to deepen existing partnerships and explore new areas of collaboration in environmental beautification, urban renewal and community-focused green development. Mrs. Popoola and her delegation were warmly received by Chairman Dauda and key council officials.

Speaking at the meeting, Mrs. Popoola congratulated Chairman Dauda on his recent emergence and reaffirmed LASPARK’s commitment to positioning Ikeja as a model for urban greening in Lagos State. She highlighted the Agency’s core mandates, including the maintenance and beautification of parks and gardens, statewide tree planting, and the promotion of recreational spaces for public wellness.

She revealed that LASPARK plans to plant 25,000 trees across Lagos by July 2026, with Ikeja expected to play a strategic role in achieving this goal. The Agency aims to plant at least 5,000 trees within the local government area, ensuring a high survival rate through joint monitoring and active community engagement.

Identifying key areas for green development, Mrs. Popoola pointed to the Ikeja Under-Bridge corridor, community open spaces, and major public setbacks, stressing the need for additional parks alongside existing facilities such as Ndubuisi Kanu Park and JJT Park. She also raised concerns about indiscriminate tree felling and pruning in areas like the GRA, calling for stronger collaboration in enforcing legal tree management regulations.

Chairman Dauda described the visit as timely and crucial for restoring Ikeja’s environmental charm. He shared that the council has already earmarked areas for beautification, including the Ikeja Under-Bridge stretch, the Secretariat to Simbiat Abiola Road setback, the LAWMA corridor, and the LASUTH perimeter.

The Chairman requested LASPARK’s assistance in extending its annual Christmas decoration from Allen Roundabout toward Alausa and the Local Government Headquarters, as well as supporting the beautification of school premises and pruning overgrown trees in public institutions.

He also highlighted the council’s focus on improving environmental hygiene, proposing the construction of modern public toilets in strategic locations to tackle open defecation.

Assuring LASPARK of Ikeja LGA’s continued cooperation, Chairman Dauda said, “We are committed to building the Ikeja we fondly remember and to handing over a greener, healthier city to the next generation.”
