In a renewed drive to entrench disability inclusion across all tiers of governance, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has called for stronger collaboration with local government institutions to ensure no resident is left behind.
EpeInsights learnt that during an advocacy visit to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development on Monday, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, underscored the need for increased attention to disability issues at the grassroots.
She urged local councils to prioritise equitable employment opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and equip care providers to better identify and support various disability clusters. According to her, “True inclusion begins in our communities. When local councils and community leaders are empowered to engage, educate, and support PWDs, we build a stronger, fairer Lagos for all.”
Oyetunde-Lawal also called for deeper collaboration with traditional rulers and Community Development Associations (CDAs) to advance Agenda PLUS, a key disability-focused initiative under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration aimed at promoting participation, leadership, understanding and support for PWDs.
Responding, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, commended LASODA’s efforts, describing the visit as timely and aligned with the Ministry’s inclusive governance agenda.
She revealed that her office had recently intervened in a recruitment matter involving a deaf applicant at the Local Government Service Commission, ensuring fairness and equitable consideration.
“While merit remains the basis for employment, inclusion and equal opportunity are non-negotiable,” she affirmed.
Bolarinwa further pledged intensified awareness campaigns to combat stigma and promote understanding of disability issues across local councils.
She assured that the Ministry would work closely with LASODA, local government chairmen, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure that PWDs are not only represented but actively involved in decision-making and community development.
The meeting ended with a shared commitment from both agencies to build a more inclusive and accessible Lagos one where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive.
