The Lagos State Government has sealed the popular Purple Mall in Lekki indefinitely following a devastating incident on Wednesday that led to the death of a young Nigerian in the mall’s parking lot.
EpeInsights reports that in a statement issued by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the Ministry confirmed the immediate closure of the facility and the formation of a special investigative team tasked with determining the root cause of the parking lot failure.
“This heartbreaking accident was entirely preventable,” Wahab stated.
“We will ensure full accountability and implement all necessary measures to prevent future occurrences.”
The investigation will focus on assessing the structural integrity of the facility, compliance with environmental and building safety standards, and identifying any lapses or violations that may have contributed to the incident.
While offering his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, the Commissioner emphasized the government’s commitment to public safety:
“Lagosians deserve safe public spaces, and we will not compromise on this.”
Residents have been assured that updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds, with the Lagos State Government reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on negligence in both public and private infrastructure.
