The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to individuals falsely claiming to be the Oba-elect of Epe, following the recent passing of the traditional ruler, Oba Shefiu Adewale, on May 31, 2025.

EpeInsights reports that in an official statement released by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Kayode Robert, the state government clarified that no individual has been selected, approved or recognized as the successor to the Olu-Epe at this time.

“The public should disregard any claim of kingship or traditional authority by unauthorized persons. The succession process has not commenced,” the Commissioner said.

He emphasized that the selection and installation of traditional rulers in Lagos State must follow due process as laid out in the Lagos State Law of Obas and Chiefs, which ensures transparency and legality in all chieftaincy matters.

To maintain peace and uphold the sanctity of the traditional stool, Mr. Robert disclosed that security agencies have been directed to intervene where necessary. Any individual found impersonating the royal title or attempting to usurp the succession process will be arrested and prosecuted.

“We will not tolerate acts of impersonation or disorder. Such actions are not only disrespectful to tradition but also illegal,” he stated.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of its traditional institutions. It also called for calm and cooperation from all stakeholders, especially the residents of Epe and relevant ruling houses.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the Commissioner added, remains committed to preserving the peace and cultural values of the state while ensuring lawful transitions in traditional leadership.

The government has urged community leaders and the general public to await official announcements regarding the succession process.
