In a bid to support retirees and promote sustainable livelihoods, the Lagos State Government has trained and empowered sixty retired public officers with practical, income-generating skills.
EpeInsights reports that the initiative aims to help them remain productive and financially independent even after leaving active service.
The two-day training programme, held at Alausa, Ikeja, focused on fish farming and catering, and was organised by the Office of the Head of Service, Public Service Office.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Permanent Secretary of the Public Service Office, Sunkanmi Oyegbola, emphasized that the empowerment project reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to the welfare of those who have served the state with dedication and loyalty.
Represented by Bukonla Durodola, Director of the Post Service Department, Oyegbola highlighted that the training was designed not just to teach new skills but also to ignite an entrepreneurial spirit among the participants.
“This programme reaffirms that retirement is not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter of purpose and productivity,” Oyegbola said.
“Beyond the acquisition of skills, I am confident that this training has reignited the flame of entrepreneurship and self-reliance that defines the Lagos State Public Service.”
She further applauded the retirees for their enthusiasm and active participation, urging them to put their new knowledge to practical use.
According to her, the support of the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, made it possible to design a training that truly equips retirees for financial sustainability through small and medium-scale enterprises.
One of the participants, Mrs. Yetunde Simpson, expressed her gratitude to the Lagos State Government, noting that the programme opened her eyes to business opportunities she had never considered before.
“This training has shown us that there are so many ways to stay active and earn a living even after retirement,” she said.
Through initiatives like this, Lagos State continues to set the pace in promoting post-retirement empowerment, ensuring that its retired officers transition smoothly into fulfilling, independent lives beyond public service.
