Lagos Reaffirms Commitment to Cancer Awareness and Early Detection — First Lady

Lagos State has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the fight against cancer and the promotion of preventive healthcare for women and families across the state.

EpeInsights reports that the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, made this known during the Lagos Pink Alliance Mega Outreach organised by the Nigerian Cancer Society (Lagos State Chapter) on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by a COWLSO member, Mrs. Edith Egube, described the outreach as “an inspiring and impactful initiative” that aligns with Lagos State’s agenda to ensure accessible and equitable healthcare for all residents.

She commended the Nigerian Cancer Society for sustaining awareness on breast cancer and for creating a strong collaborative platform that brings together stakeholders from government, the private sector, health institutions and advocacy groups.

Speaking on the theme of the event, “Strength in Unity,” the First Lady emphasized that defeating cancer requires collective effort.

“No single individual, group, or institution can win the war against cancer alone. It is through collaboration, awareness, and compassion that we can truly make a difference,” she stated.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu highlighted that Lagos State remains deeply committed to promoting preventive healthcare, with numerous initiatives designed to strengthen the public health system. These include the ILERA EKO Health Insurance Scheme, community medical outreaches, and the revitalization of primary healthcare centres across all Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas.

She further noted that the Office of the First Lady has been at the forefront of causes that improve women’s well-being and family health, particularly in areas such as cancer awareness, the fight against gender-based violence and drug abuse prevention.

“Our approach has always been anchored on education, empowerment, and empathy, because we believe that knowledge saves lives and support gives hope,” she said.

While saluting cancer survivors for their resilience and courage, the First Lady reaffirmed the government’s support for ongoing campaigns promoting regular breast and cervical cancer screenings, healthy lifestyles and affordable care for underserved communities.

She expressed appreciation to corporate partners, NGOs, and volunteers for their sustained collaboration in reducing the burden of cancer, noting that their commitment continues to save lives and inspire hope.

“Every step we take is a step of hope — hope for early detection, better treatment outcomes, and a future where no woman dies needlessly from cancer,” she said.

Reassuring residents of government’s continuous investment in health, Dr. Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed:

“The Lagos State Government remains committed to supporting all efforts aimed at reducing the burden of cancer in our society. Indeed, our strength lies in our unity.”

The Lagos Pink Alliance Mega Outreach featured a health walk, free cancer screenings, fitness sessions, and counseling for participants, further reinforcing the state’s mission to create a healthier, cancer-free society.
