As part of its long-term vision to position indigenous fashion on the global map, the Lagos State Government is deepening its engagement with key international stakeholders to spotlight Adire, the iconic Yoruba hand-dyed textile as a cultural and economic asset.

EpeInsights gathered that a notable step in this direction was a high-level meeting held some weeks ago between the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka and Her Majesty Queen Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, founder of Africa Fashion Week London and Nigeria.

Also present at the meeting was the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Jonny Baxter.

The dialogue centered on strategies for elevating Adire beyond its traditional roots into a globally recognized fashion staple.

The discussions however underscored the fabric’s artistic value and economic potential as a major export that embodies Nigeria’s rich heritage and craftsmanship.

Lagos State Commissioner Benson-Awoyinka reaffirmed the Lagos state’s commitment to nurturing creative industries and empowering designers through sustained support and collaboration.

She emphasized that preserving cultural identity while opening doors to global markets is a vital part of Lagos State’s cultural and economic development strategy.

“Lagos has always been the creative heartbeat of Nigeria. Our role is to lead in innovation while championing our cultural uniqueness,” she said.

“Through platforms that celebrate African fashion, we’re not only telling our stories, we’re also building future economies.”

The meeting also laid the groundwork for broader participation in the upcoming 15th edition of Africa Fashion Week London, a landmark event that continues to showcase African designers and heritage on a global stage.

By aligning with international fashion advocates and institutions, Lagos State is reinforcing its role as a cultural powerhouse.

The state’s proactive stance signals an enduring commitment to promoting African fashion, preserving heritage, and unlocking new economic pathways through global creative partnerships.Lagos Pushes Indigenous Fashion to the Global Stage Through Strategic Collaboration Lagos Pushes Indigenous Fashion to the Global Stage Through Strategic CollaborationLagos Pushes Indigenous Fashion to the Global Stage Through Strategic Collaboration
