The Lagos State Government has once again reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the scourge of domestic and sexual violence as it observes the 2025 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, with a renewed call for proactive measures to prevent and address the menace.

EpeInsights reports that the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Chairman of Conference 57, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, while reacting on the commemoration described domestic and sexual violence as pervasive issues that cut across age, gender, race and socioeconomic status.

Olowa stressed that the devastating impact of such violence extends beyond survivors, affecting families, communities and the society at large.

โ€œDomestic and sexual violence often occur in silence, hidden behind closed doors or masked by stigma. The consequences are profound ranging from physical and mental health challenges to social and economic disruption. Children exposed to such abuse are also at greater risk of repeating the cycle of trauma later in life,โ€ Olowa said.

He emphasized that government would continue to intensify education and sensitization campaigns while strengthening support systems for survivors.

According to him, creating safe spaces for victims to speak out is essential to breaking the culture of silence that allows abuse to thrive.

โ€œDomestic and sexual violence thrive in silence, but awareness is a powerful tool for change. By educating ourselves, supporting survivors, and advocating for systemic reforms, we can create a society built on safety, respect and equality,โ€ he added.

The Chairman further called on stakeholders, community leaders, civil society organizations and residents to unite in amplifying the message of prevention and support, noting that collective responsibility remains key in building stronger, safer communities.

The month-long Awareness is observed annually in Lagos provides an opportunity to shed light on the scale of the problem, highlight government interventions and encourage more citizens to take an active stand against all forms of abuse.
