A total of 73 people lost their lives and 393 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in road crashes that occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway between January and March 2025.
EpeInsights reports that the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, revealed this in a report, saying 175 road traffic crashes were recorded involving 1,271 individuals on the expressway within the three-month period.
The data shows that January recorded the highest number of crashes, while February saw the highest number of fatalities. Specific incidents included a crash at Ayetoro in February that resulted in nine deaths, a lone accident at Fatgbems bus stop in January that killed five persons, and an accident at Alapako in March where four people died.
According to the breakdown provided in the report, 21 deaths occurred in January, 30 in February, and 22 in March. For injuries, January recorded 155 cases, February had 96, and March recorded 142.
The report noted a decrease in the number of crashes and injuries in February and March compared to January. It stated that there was a 29 percent reduction in crashes in February over January and a 6 percent reduction in March over January. Injuries dropped by 38 percent in February and 8 percent in March, relative to January figures.
However, despite the reduction in crash frequency and injuries, fatalities rose. There was a 43 percent increase in the number of deaths in February over January and a 5 percent increase in March compared to January.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway continues to be one of the most accident-prone roads in the country, raising concerns about road safety and the urgent need for improved enforcement and infrastructure upgrades.
