The Lagos State High Court will embark on its annual vacation starting July 21, 2025, marking the end of the 2024/2025 legal year, according to an official notice from the state judiciary.

EpeInsights reports that the notification, dated June 5, was signed by the Chief Registrar, Mr. Tajudeen Elias, and approved by the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, in line with Order 49, Rule 4(D) of the Lagos Civil Procedure Rules (2019).

According to the statement, the vacation will run until September 12, with regular court sessions expected to resume thereafter.

Despite the scheduled break, the Criminal Division of the High Court will remain in session throughout the period.

The registrar clarified that where judges in the criminal division proceed on vacation, vacation judges will be assigned to continue hearing pending cases.Lagos High Court to Commence Annual Vacation July 21

“Any urgent matter during this period may be heard with the consent of parties involved, provided it is not on a Sunday or public holiday,” the statement added.

Applications for emergency hearings may be filed by summons in chambers, either before the assigned vacation judge or the judge handling the substantive matter.

The Lagos State judiciary’s 2025/2026 legal year is scheduled to begin on September 15, with a formal service and ceremonial sitting to mark the new legal calendar slated for September 22.

The court vacation is a standard part of Nigeria’s judicial calendar, aimed at offering rest and administrative preparation time for judges and court personnel while allowing continuity for urgent legal matters.
