A 44-year-old civil servant, Charles Ogunyinka, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on charges of unlawful and indecent touching of his three-year-old daughter.
EpeInsights learnt that the disturbing incident reportedly occurred in January 2025 at the defendant’s residence in Abaranje, Ikotun area of Lagos State.
Ogunyinka is accused of sexually molesting the minor while her mother briefly left her in his care.
According to the prosecuting officer, ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji, the child began crying upon her mother’s return. When questioned, the toddler gestured toward her private parts and pointed at her father, prompting immediate concern and legal action.
The prosecution stated that the alleged offence violates Section 263 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which criminalizes unlawful and indecent touching, especially of minors.
Ogunyinka, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Presiding over the matter, Chief Magistrate O. O. Kushanu granted bail in the sum of ₦250,000, with two sureties required to post an equal amount. The sureties must be gainfully employed and provide verified addresses.
The case has been adjourned to September 11, 2025, for mention.
This case is one of several recently reported incidents involving the sexual abuse of minors in Lagos, fueling growing public outcry and calls for stiffer legal penalties. Child rights advocates continue to emphasize the urgent need for stronger safeguards within families and communities.
Legal experts suggest that if found guilty, Ogunyinka could face significant jail time and permanent listing on the sex offender register in accordance with Lagos State child protection laws.
Meanwhile, authorities urge parents and caregivers to report any suspected cases of abuse and to remain vigilant, even within family structures.
