The 2025 edition of the annual Kayokayo Festival in Epe Kingdom will be held in honour of the late Olu Epe, His Royal Majesty Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale.

EpeInsights reports that despite the absence of a reigning monarch, the festival will proceed with a renewed focus on cultural, religious, and social significance.

The announcement was made during a press conference held on July 18, 2025, at the 1st Epe Central Mosque, Oke Balogun. Chairman of the Kayokayo Advisory Board, Alhaji Alade-Soliu Okulu, addressed the media, emphasizing the festival’s roots in the historic journey of King Kosoko to Epe in 1851.

The journey, marked by the presence of a symbolic light known as “Etufu,” remains central to the cultural aspect of the festival.

Alhaji Okulu also reiterated the festival’s dual focus on promoting Islamic values and enhancing community ties. He highlighted that the festival is known for its inclusive spirit, which is further expressed through communal meals.

To strengthen this aspect, the organizing committee has introduced a new program called “Street Feeding,” where meals will be distributed across various streets in Epe.

This initiative is set to take place on Thursday at the Epe Ogunmodede Club.

The committee assured the public of a peaceful atmosphere, noting that necessary security measures have been put in place to ensure safety throughout the festival. Alhaji Okulu, a retired Comptroller of Customs, noted that the town remains secure and welcoming to guests and participants.

Barrister Bayo Okulu, the festival’s coordinator, confirmed that preparations are being conducted with support from the Lagos State Government, corporate sponsors, and individual contributors. He added that earlier planning is being adopted to attract more robust support and sponsorship in future editions.

The Grand Chief Imam of Epe Division, Sheikh Abdul-Rahman Abiola Sadallah, advised the committee to increase focus on the Islamic dimension of the festival.

He suggested expanding the Qur’anic competition by inviting participants from outside the state, aiming to elevate both the spiritual and educational value of the celebration. He also encouraged the allocation of a larger portion of funds towards religious activities.

Engineer Gbajumo Ahmed Olalekan, Chairman of the Publicity Sub-Committee, stated that the event has been reorganized to include several surprises.

He confirmed that arrangements have been made for extensive media coverage to enhance the festival’s visibility.

He called on the public not to miss any part of the celebration, from the opening to the grand finale.

The Kayokayo Festival continues to serve as a platform to celebrate heritage, promote religious devotion, and boost local economic activity through tourism and cultural engagement.
