Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has intensified enforcement of environmental sanitation and public space regulations across Lakowe, Losoro, Ogunfayo, and Awoyaya communities.

Epe Insights reports that the coordinated monitoring and enforcement exercise was carried out on January 2026, as part of efforts to improve environmental hygiene and protect public infrastructure.

During the exercise, officials discovered several drainages clogged with household refuse, plastic waste, bottles, and debris, leading to stagnant water, foul odour, and visible environmental degradation.

In some areas, the blocked drainages were located directly in front of residential buildings, leaving pools of dirty water at entrances and exposing residents to flooding and serious health risks.

The situation in Lakowe and Losoro raised particular concern, as drainages recently constructed by the local government had already been filled with refuse.

Officials described the act as a clear abuse of public infrastructure, warning residents against using government-built drainages as dumping sites.

They stressed that drainage systems are designed to protect lives and property by preventing flooding and environmental hazards.

At the Awoyaya Market, traders found occupying pedestrian walkways and road setbacks were ordered to vacate the areas immediately.

The enforcement team reiterated that walkways are strictly meant for pedestrians and must remain free from trading activities.

Officials emphasized that any obstruction of public spaces poses safety risks and would not be tolerated under existing regulations.

Compliance was enforced on the spot, restoring free movement and improving safety for pedestrians and road users.

The local government urged residents and traders to adopt proper waste disposal practices and respect public infrastructure.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to sustained sanitation enforcement to promote a cleaner, safer, and healthier Ibeju-Lekki environment.
