A delegation constituted by the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, on Monday paid a visit to Iberekodo community and other areas recently affected by heavy flooding.
EpeInsights learnt that the visit marks the beginning of a coordinated relief and intervention plan by the local government to mitigate the impact of the disaster on affected residents.
The delegation, which included key officials such as the Chief Technical Adviser on Environment, Hon. Ajumobi Lateef; the Medical Officer for Health, Dr. Taiwo Sosanya; the CDC Chairman, Comrade Jabita Adeboye; and Mr. Tunji Adewale, was mandated to carry out an on-the-ground assessment of the flood’s impact, collect data on affected households, and commence the process of distributing emergency relief items.
According to the Council Chairman’s directive, priority relief materials for immediate distribution include treated mosquito nets, anti-malaria drugs, and basic medical kits.
These items are aimed at addressing the urgent health and environmental risks posed by stagnant floodwaters, particularly the spread of malaria and other waterborne diseases.
A comprehensive list of affected households has been compiled to guide a transparent and equitable distribution process. Community leaders, including the Community Development Committee (CDC), have pledged to work in close collaboration with the local government to ensure that relief items are delivered promptly and fairly, with special attention given to the most vulnerable residents.
This visit and relief exercise represent the first phase of a broader emergency response strategy being implemented by the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government. Chairman Olowa reiterated the administration’s commitment to not only addressing the immediate needs of flood-impacted communities but also to seeking long-term, sustainable solutions to the perennial flooding challenges that continue to plague the region.
He assured residents that discussions are ongoing with relevant State and Federal agencies to fast-track infrastructural interventions that will enhance drainage systems and improve the area’s resilience to future flooding events.
The Ibeju-Lekki Local Government continues to urge residents to remain calm and cooperative, as relief efforts unfold in the days ahead.
