In a decisive move to address the worsening flooding in Ibeju-Lekki, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, on Saturday embarked on an on-the-spot inspection of several communities repeatedly affected by seasonal floods.
EpeInsights learnt that the tour, which covered Baba Adisa, Alakun, Elepete, Igando-Oloja, and Alatishe communities, was conducted alongside key officials from the Environmental and Works Departments, as well as local government supervisors.
Speaking during the visit, Hon. Olowa decried the indiscriminate building practices and disregard for urban planning regulations, which he said have significantly contributed to the flooding menace in the area.
“It is unfortunate that many of these issues stem from human activities — from unregulated construction to poor drainage maintenance,” he said.
“We cannot fold our arms while our people suffer the consequences of these avoidable mistakes.”
The Executive Chairman assured residents that the local government is taking the situation seriously and announced plans to set up a technical committee. The committee will be tasked with assessing the flooding problems and proposing sustainable solutions to mitigate further damage.
Community members who spoke during the visit expressed relief at the attention from the local government and urged for swift intervention, especially in areas where homes and roads have become inaccessible due to constant waterlogging.
The inspection tour is part of a broader response strategy by the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government to combat the environmental and infrastructural challenges affecting the region during the rainy season.
