Members of Team Lagos, en route to the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State, were involved in a road accident along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Friday.

EpeInsights gathered that there were no fatalities, though two officials are currently receiving medical care.

According to the Technical Director of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Travih Nunayon, all other affected individuals have been discharged after receiving prompt medical attention.

“Yes, there were a few injuries, but everyone has been treated and discharged except two who are still under observation,” Nunayon confirmed.

Despite the scare, Team Lagos’ delegation consisting of over 750 athletes has successfully arrived in Abeokuta. The team’s general captain, Olowo Adewale, remains optimistic about their prospects.

“It was a minor incident, and we thank God everyone is safe. Our focus is on the competition, and we’re ready to make Lagos proud,” Adewale said. “Lagos always comes prepared. When the games begin, our performance will speak volumes.”

Gateway Games 2024 Kicks Off

The 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival—“Gateway Games 2024”—officially begins with the opening ceremony on Sunday, May 18.

The multi-sport event will run until May 30, featuring over 15,000 athletes from across Nigeria.

This year’s festival is one of the most expansive yet, with 549 events offering 2,150 medals, including:

  • 626 gold

  • 626 silver

  • 898 bronze

Venues across Abeokuta, Ikenne, Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode will host the competitions.

A notable feature of this year’s festival is the introduction of the Invited Junior Athletes category, providing a platform for emerging young athletes to compete on a national stage alongside senior competitors.
