As the world commemorates World Blood Donor Day on June 14, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe, has launched a Blood Donor Awareness Week from June 12 to 18, 2025, with a call for more residents to embrace voluntary blood donation.

EpeInsights reports that the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Adesola Adeleke Kaka, emphasized the life-saving importance of donating blood, describing it as a selfless act that plays a crucial role in emergency care, maternal health, and chronic illness management.

“Every year, we commemorate our blood donors—people who selflessly give their blood without expecting anything in return, just to save humanity,” Dr. Kaka said in an interview ahead of the campaign.

The awareness week aims to celebrate regular donors and encourage new participants, particularly among young adults. Dr. Kaka noted that a consistent supply of safe blood is critical in treating accident victims, trauma cases, pregnant women, and children with severe illnesses.

Addressing a common concern among the public, Dr. Kaka made it clear that blood is not for sale at FMC Epe. The only cost patients incur is a ₦10,000 screening fee, which covers mandatory tests for infections like HIV and hepatitis to ensure safety.

“People often think hospitals sell blood, but that’s not true,” he said. “The ₦10,000 is strictly for screening, and even that is lower than what many other facilities charge.”

FMC Epe’s community-based approach includes collaboration with local groups like the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Epe Chapter. Dr. Kaka praised their support in public enlightenment and blood tracking through the hospital’s Blood Transfusion Committee.

“They’ve been part of this effort even before my tenure. Their engagement ensures transparency and community trust,” he added.

Healthy individuals aged 18 to 60 are eligible to donate, with up to four donations per year depending on their blood levels. Dr. Kaka stressed that blood donation is not only safe but beneficial to the donor.

“It takes just 15 to 20 minutes. It activates bone marrow, reduces the risk of blood clots, and improves overall health,” he said.

Dr. Kaka also reminded residents that FMC Epe continues to operate under the affordable tariff system of the former General Hospital, making it a viable option for quality, accessible healthcare.

He further urged the public to consider health insurance schemes as a long-term solution to medical expenses.

“Insurance costs less than one emergency bill. Philanthropists in our community can also help by sponsoring insurance plans for vulnerable families. It’s a more sustainable way to offer help,” he said.

As the awareness campaign unfolds, FMC Epe reaffirms its commitment to saving lives and making safe blood available to all.

“Donating blood saves lives. It’s one of the most powerful gifts you can give to someone in need,” Dr. Kaka concluded.FMC Epe Commemorates World Blood Donor Day with Life-Saving Blood Donation Campaign
