As global calls for climate action intensify, Epe, a Lagos community is proving that sustainable change can start at the grassroots.

EpeInsights reports that Epe Local Government Area launched a bold waste-to-wealth initiative aimed at reducing methane emissions and promoting climate resilience.

With composting, recycling and public education at the heart of the programme, the initiative is part of a larger strategy to promote environmental sustainability while creating economic opportunities.

“This initiative aligns with our development goals, and we are committed to supporting it,” said Ganiyu, Vice-Chairman of Epe LGA.

Upcoming efforts include zero-waste market campaigns, radio jingles, and community workshops, all designed to embed a culture of sustainability across the local population.

As Nigeria faces the realities of flooding, desertification and food insecurity tied to climate change, Epe’s model offers a replicable framework for other communities.

It also strengthens the country’s efforts to meet its Paris Agreement targets.

“We are proving that climate action doesn’t have to come from the top,” said environmental advocate Melody Enyinnaya.

“It can start from the community and ripple outward.”

Early wins are already visible: farms in the area are beginning to reap the benefits of compost-enriched soil, offering a glimpse of how local innovation can deliver both climate and economic benefits.

If scaled, this model could help reshape how Nigeria and other developing nations approach climate action: from the ground up.
