A former Presidential aide Doyin Okupe has died of cancer.
Epe Insights reports that a Nigerian politician and medical doctor, who once served as a presidential aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe has died at age 72.
A report filed by Sahara Reporters quoted family sources to have said that Okupe died after he had been seriously ill for several weeks.
According to the report, Okupe’s health got worse recently, causing worry among his family and supporters before he died.
It was gathered that Doyin Okupe died from cancer after a long battle with the disease. In October 2023, Okupe was hospitalised with prostate cancer and went to Israel for treatment, but his condition didn’t improve as hoped.
Okupe was first diagnosed with prostate cancer 16 years ago and later developed another type of cancer (sarcoma) in his right shoulder.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm in May 2024, Okupe revealed his battle with cancer and he had become an ordained evangelist and plans to focus primarily on evangelism moving forward.
Okupe said, “This is the second time I’m beating cancer, the first time was 16 years ago, which was prostrate and this time it was the soft tissues of my right shoulders.
“In all these, I bear witness to God and Jesus Christ, I’m a testimony to the fact that there is nothing the Lord God Jehovah can’t do. From now on, I have become an evangelist and a witness for Christ.”
When asked about whether his weight loss was the result of surgery or personal discipline, the politician responded: “It’s part in part, the first problem was cancer I had, and the chemotherapy makes you lose appetite, you have nausea, and even as you sustain for several months, you lose weight.
“When I started chemotherapy, I was 127kg, and then I came down to 97kg… the chemotherapy ended, and I went back to 103kg.”
