A bill to establish a specialized Federal University in Epe has passed second reading in the Senate.
Epe Insights reports that the Nigerian Senate passed into second reading a bill seeking to establish the Federal University of Science and Technology in Epe, Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial city.
The bill sponsored by the Senate leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, was seconded by the Deputy Senate Leader, Oyelola Ashiru of Kwara State, north-central Nigeria.
While making a presentation on the floor of the Senate during a plenary, Bamidele said the institution, when established, would produce an array of highly skilled graduates whose key focus would be to run innovative growth across the nation.
The Senator noted that the university would also provide educational training ground in various fields, including Software Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Engineering and Mathematics among others and drive Nigeria’s digital economy.
His words, “This is the fundamental justification for the establishment of this specialised institution of higher learning, Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State.
“For Nigeria to become one of the world’s leading economies as currently being pursued by this administration, we must be ready to adjust and position our educational institutions so that their products are geared for the technological challenges inherent in such projections,” Bamidele said.
In his address, Senator Ashiru noted that with the rising profile of Epe, approving such an establishment would advance Nigeria’s digital space and economy.
Senator Ashiru also urged the leadership of the Senate to approve the bill for the creation of the institution
Meanwhile, Epe Insights reports that the bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further consideration, with a report expected within four weeks.

Sponsored by the Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, and seconded by Deputy Leader Senator Oyelola Ashiru, the bill aims to produce highly skilled graduates to drive Nigeria’s innovation and economic growth.
During the debate, Bamidele emphasized the university’s mission to provide specialized education in fields like Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and various natural sciences.
“For Nigeria to become one of the world’s leading economies, we must position our educational institutions to tackle technological challenges,” Bamidele stated.
Supporting the bill, Ashiru highlighted Epe’s strategic importance as a growing economic hub near Ibeju-Lekki, known for its industrial activities and creative economy. He called on the Senate to approve the bill for the advancement of the region and the nation.
The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further consideration, with a report expected within four weeks.
