As preparations gear up for this year’s edition of the renowned Kayokayo Festival, the Bado Isale community in Epe has announced its scheduled participation in one of the festival’s most symbolic traditions, the Lighting of the Etufu which will take place on Saturday, July 19, 2025.

EpeInsights gathered that the Etufu, a traditional torch made from dry palm fronds, holds deep historical significance in Epe’s cultural identity.

According to oral history, it was the light source used by the ancestors of Epe to navigate the night King Kosoko arrived in Epe in 1851 following his exile from Lagos.

Since then, the Lighting of the Etufu has become an enduring part of the Kayokayo Festival, representing a link to Epe’s royal past and cultural roots.

In a public message issued to members of the Bado Isale Descendants Forum, General Secretary Kadri Idowu described the event as not just a cultural celebration, but also a moment of pride for the community.

“The Lighting of Etufu is symbolic,” he said.

“It reminds us of the strength of our ancestors, our heritage, and the journey that has brought us to where we are today. It also marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, Muharram — a sacred time of spiritual renewal for the Muslim faithful.”

The Kayokayo Festival, held annually in Epe, is a vibrant celebration that combines cultural pride, religious observance, and community bonding.

Known for its colorful processions, traditional cuisine, and deep-rooted customs, the festival attracts visitors from across Lagos State and beyond.

Mr. Idowu extended a warm invitation to all sons and daughters of Bado Isale, both at home and in the diaspora, to participate fully in this year’s activities. “Come one, come all,” he urged.

“Let us come together in unity, celebrate our heritage, and pass on the torch of tradition to the next generation.”

With high anticipation and preparations in full swing, the Bado Isale community is set to light the way once again — both literally and symbolically in this year’s Kayokayo Festival.Bado Isale Community Set to Light Etufu Torch in Celebration of Kayokayo Festival
