In a proactive effort to tackle the perennial flooding challenges affecting several communities, the Ad-Hoc Committee on Flood Mitigation and Planning, led by Hon. Raheem Kazeem, former member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, conducted an extensive field inspection yesterday across flood-prone areas within Ibeju-Lekki Local Government.
EpeInsights gathered that the committee’s tour aimed at identifying critical flood-prone locations, understanding the root causes of flooding and formulating effective mitigation strategies to protect vulnerable communities.
Among the communities visited were Eputu, Shapati, Bogije Road, Elesekan, Igbojia, Kajola and several other towns facing recurring flood threats.
These areas have experienced seasonal flooding, disrupting daily life and causing damage to property and infrastructure.
Members of the committee who took part in the inspection include key technical and environmental personnel: Council Engineer Engr. Kamiyo Adetola Tijani, Hon. Gbenga Balogun, Head of Department (HOD) Environment, Sanitarian Akinola Mary, Chief Technical Assistant (CTA) Environment Hon. Ajumobi Lateef, CDC Chairman Mr. Jabita Adeboye, Engineer Otus, and Hon. Akorede Ojomu.
Hon. Raheem Kazeem emphasized the committee’s commitment to a comprehensive approach to flood management, stating that “our inspection today is to ensure that we accurately map out the flood hotspots and understand the factors causing these floods so that we can implement sustainable solutions that will protect our communities and promote resilience.”
The findings from the inspection will inform the development of a detailed flood mitigation plan aimed at reducing the impact of flooding through infrastructural improvements, effective drainage systems, and community awareness programs.
This initiative is part of the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and safeguarding the welfare of its residents.
