The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has lauded Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support of the ongoing construction of the permanent “Door of Return” heritage site in Badagry.
EpeInsights learnt that during an assessment visit to the construction site, Dabiri-Erewa described the project as a powerful symbol of remembrance and reconnection for Africans in the diaspora, particularly the descendants of those taken away during the transatlantic slave trade.
“This project represents healing, history, and homecoming. We are proud to be part of this initiative that resonates deeply with our diaspora brothers and sisters,” she stated.
The NiDCOM boss praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for his foresight in promoting diaspora engagement through cultural investments, especially in Badagry, a town globally recognised for its historical role in the slave trade era.
She added that the “Door of Return” project would serve not only as a major heritage tourism site but also as a hub for cultural exchange and diaspora investment, helping to reclaim and celebrate African identity and history.
Hon. Solomon Sanu, who represents Badagry in the Lagos State House of Assembly, also expressed optimism about the project.
He said the people of Badagry are proud to host such a globally significant monument and look forward to its completion.
“The entire Badagry community is eagerly awaiting the commissioning of this historic tourism edifice,” Sanu noted.
Once completed, the “Door of Return” is expected to become a global attraction and a vital platform for fostering unity, healing, and cultural pride among people of African descent around the world.
