The Executive Members of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Somolu Zone, have paid a courtesy visit to the Supervising Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary (TG/PS) of Education District II, Mr. Olusegun Osinaike, reaffirming their commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government’s educational goals.
The visit, which took place on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the District Headquarters in Maryland, was led by the Zone Chairman, Mrs. Soyoye Oluyinka Ebunoluwa, alongside other executive members.
Welcoming the delegation, Mr. Osinaike appreciated the team for their goodwill and reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving staffing challenges. He disclosed that the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) is actively recruiting for both teaching and non-teaching roles to address the manpower gap in public schools.
He further assured the delegation that the appointments of Principals and Vice Principals would be fast-tracked, stating that such promotions would be guided by merit, seniority, and integrity.
“Please ensure that those recommended for leadership positions are qualified and have a clean record. We want credible individuals who are due for elevation and can add value to school administration,” Mr. Osinaike stressed, requesting that recommendations be submitted within 24 hours.
On school security, he revealed that formal requests had been submitted to the Ministry of Special Duties, and he remains optimistic about a prompt response to address the issue of inadequate security personnel.
Mr. Osinaike also addressed the issue of students engaging in vocational training during school hours, which has contributed to reduced class attendance. He called on principals to adopt a more holistic and inclusive teaching approach that stimulates interest across the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains.
“The cognitive domain alone cannot retain students’ interest. We must win the hearts of both the students and their parents by making learning meaningful and inclusive,” he noted.
Highlighting the importance of leadership and motivation in academic outcomes, the TG/PS emphasized that school performance in national examinations such as WAEC and BECE will continue to serve as a benchmark for leadership advancement.
Earlier, Mrs. Soyoye congratulated Mr. Osinaike on his appointment and applauded his transformative leadership. She pledged ANCOPSS Somolu Zone’s full support for his administration, noting that the zone, despite being the smallest in the district with only 19 schools (10 senior and 9 junior), has consistently punched above its weight.
“Somolu Zone is known as ‘The Small but Mighty’ for good reason,” she remarked, citing the zone’s outstanding achievements, including producing a One-Day Governor, winning the Best Junior Secondary School in Nigeria award, and excelling in state and national competitions.
She also presented key concerns affecting the zone, including; acute shortage of teaching and non-teaching staff, àbsence of Principals and Vice Principals in some schools, security lapses due to inadequate day and night guards, growing parental apathy due to vocational training conflicts and infrastructure gaps in some school facilities.
The meeting ended on a note of renewed collaboration, mutual respect, and shared dedication to raising the standard of education in Somolu Zone and across Education District II.
Also in attendance were other ANCOPSS Somolu Zone executives, including Mrs. Abioye Aderoju Christiana (Vice Chairman), Mrs. Jinmi-Ahisu Yetunde Helen (Secretary), Mrs. Majekodunmi Olanrewaju Abiola (Financial Secretary/Treasurer), Mr. Ogunlade Olufemi (PRO), and Mrs. Tijani Monsurat Olaide (Assistant Secretary), along with top directors from the District Headquarters.
