The Executive Chairman of Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Ismail Monsuru Akinloye, has commenced emergency clearing of waterways linking Ibonwon, Igbooye and Ilara as part of efforts to reduce flooding and protect residents from erosion.
Epe Insights reports that the intervention focused on clearing overgrown grasses and vegetation along the river channel separating Ibonwon from Igbooye and Ilara to improve the free flow of water and reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
The exercise forms part of the Eredo LCDA administration’s ongoing commitment to addressing environmental challenges and protecting communities vulnerable to flooding.
Hon. Akinloye said the emergency response became necessary following concerns over rising water levels and the threat of erosion to homes, farmlands and public infrastructure.
According to the Chairman, restoring the natural flow of water through the river channel remains one of the immediate steps required to reduce flood risks across the affected communities.
He explained that clearing blocked waterways helps prevent water from overflowing into residential areas while improving drainage during periods of heavy rainfall.
The Chairman assured residents that the clearing operation is only the beginning of broader interventions aimed at strengthening flood control measures within Eredo LCDA.
He stated that additional projects and environmental improvements would be implemented to minimise erosion and safeguard lives and property.
Hon. Akinloye reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to responding promptly to environmental challenges through practical and sustainable solutions.
During the exercise, the Olori Odo of Ibonwon mobilised additional community support to strengthen the clearing operation and ensure the work progressed efficiently.
Residents and volunteers joined council officials in removing thick vegetation, roots and other materials obstructing the free flow of water within the stream.
Among those who actively participated were Comrade Titilayo and Comrade Kabiru (KB), who entered the waterway to remove roots, grasses and other blockages.
Their efforts contributed significantly to improving water movement and restoring the drainage channel.
Community members commended the teamwork displayed throughout the exercise, describing it as an example of effective collaboration between government officials and residents.

Many expressed appreciation to the Eredo LCDA administration for responding quickly to the flooding concerns affecting the affected communities.
Residents also praised the volunteers who supported the exercise, noting that their commitment demonstrated the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
Environmental experts have consistently emphasised that regular clearing of waterways plays a critical role in reducing flooding, preventing erosion and maintaining healthy drainage systems.
They also stressed that community participation remains essential for sustaining flood prevention efforts and protecting public infrastructure.
The Chairman encouraged residents to avoid dumping refuse or debris into drainage channels and waterways, warning that such practices contribute to flooding and environmental degradation.
He called on community leaders, youth groups and residents to continue supporting government initiatives aimed at keeping waterways clean throughout the year.
According to Hon. Akinloye, protecting the environment requires shared responsibility, with government and citizens working together to preserve drainage infrastructure and reduce disaster risks.
The emergency clearing operation reflects Eredo LCDA’s determination to tackle flooding proactively while improving environmental safety across Ibonwon, Igbooye and Ilara. The council says it will continue implementing practical interventions and engaging communities to ensure lasting protection for lives, property and critical infrastructure.
