Lagos is set to install 3,000 e-police and speed limit cameras for traffic management.

Epe Insights reports that the Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced plans to install 3,000 electronic police (e-police) and speed limit cameras to enhance traffic law enforcement and improve road safety.

Engr. Akin-George Fashola, the director of the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), made this known during Lagos Transport Trends and Perspectives, a radio programme sponsored by the Ministry of Transportation on Traffic Radio 96.1 FM on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

The Lagos VIS Director speed limit cameras have already been deployed at key locations, including Alapere-Ogudu Road where the speed limits are set at 80 km/h inbound Alausa and 60 km/h inbound Iyana Oworo.

Fashola said cameras have also been installed along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, enforcing a speed limit of 60 km/h.

He further revealed that e-police cameras are operational at Allen junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo road in Ikeja to monitor violations such as red-light running and other traffic infractions.

The Director of the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service advised motorists to pay attention to warning signs placed at these locations to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

Speaking on penalties, the VIS Director emphasised that offenders caught exceeding speed limits would face a fine of ₦50,000.

The VIS Director further noted that motorists who believe they were wrongly fined could contest the penalty by providing evidence to support their claim.

When asked whether commercial vehicles were exempted from these enforcement measures, Engr. Fashola clarified that no exemptions exist.

The VIS Director said an average of 50 commercial buses are apprehended daily for various traffic offenses.

The Lagos State Government in a bid to simplify vehicle registration and inspection processes, introduced an online roadworthiness recertification system for pre-existing vehicle owners.

According to him, the new initiative enables vehicle owners to renew their roadworthiness certificates online without visiting a VIS office.

“The VIS now offers an auto verification service for individuals looking to purchase used vehicles.

“This service provides a comprehensive history of a vehicle, helping buyers make informed decisions before purchasing,” he stated.

The VIS Director encouraged Lagos residents to visit the VIS website or any of the 45 VIS centers across the state for more information and assistance.
